Kate Upton on the Cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cheap nfl jerseys Issue for Second Consecutive Year
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has made a name for itself in sports, fashion, publishing, pop culture and water cooler conversations around the globe. So has Kate Upton. cheap jerseys
Which makes sense that the 20 year old model will grace the cover of the 2013 version of SI’s scantily clad money maker, marking her second year in a row. An image of the 2013 cover was leaked early Friday, and quickly circulated the Internet. Sports Illustrated released a high resolution version of the cover about two hours later. The magazine will be available Feb. 12, and will be officially unveiled the night before on "Late Night with David Letterman."
Upton will become the ninth model to grace the coveted SI Swimsuit Edition cover twice. Four women have been the cover model three times, including February 2012 FORBES cover subject Kathy Ireland, who appeared in the swimsuit issue for 13 straight years, and whose 1989 cover is still the best selling issue to date. Elle Macpherson has been on the cover the most, with five appearances.
Upton’s sophomore appearance comes after she found great success following her first cover. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is often a springboard into other lucrative ventures, including acting, which Upton has started doing more and more. Corporate endorsements are already pouring in. Along with gracing the cover of many other magazines, she has repped cheap nfl jerseys Mercedes Benz, Carl’s Jr., Guess, Sobe, MLB2k12, DirecTV and Sam Edelman shoes.
The first SI Swimsuit Edition hit newsstands on Jan. 20, 1964 (which means, yes, next year’s 50th anniversary issue will be huge). The original edition was actually just a five page supplement. The magazine’s editor at the time, Andre Laguerre, decided it would increase readership during the winter: Football just ended, baseball hasn’t yet arrived, the NBA wasn’t quite what it is now. How about adding some skin? Bingo.
It worked. It worked, really well actually. Babette March was the covergirl, wearing a white two piece, which was very modest compared to what today’s models for the same publication wear (or don’t wear).
The swimsuit edition became a stand alone issue for Sports Illustrated in 1997, and has become one of Time Inc.’s biggest revenue drivers over the years, bringing in more than $1 billion. In 2005 alone, the swimsuit issue generated an estimated $35 million in ad sales. On top of that there are outside merchandise sales like calendars, too. Today, it generates about seven percent of SI’s annual revenue.
Being a part of such a cultural staple is big for personal branding. Maybe we’ll see Time Inc.’s numbers grow with the return of Upton, now and in the future. It’s hard to argue against the fact that 2012 was her year. Clearly she’s just getting started.
I write about the fashion side of the sports industry, from sweatbands to cufflinks. I got my start with sports writing at the University of Arizona, where I was a sports editor and editor in chief for the Arizona Daily Wildcat. Shaq once questioned the validity of my age. Rob Gronkowski and I once ate hot dogs together at midnight. I spent a day on the golf course with Richard Jefferson discussing the Kardashians. I’m also busy analyzing digital ads for the Forbes Advertising Operations team. .
